This year’s Family/Sharing Day strayed slightly from its usual celebration of family and friends, to include a special recognition of Bill Miller. On September 6, Martha Lloyd said farewell to Bill but not before saying thank you. As often as it had been expressed over the last several months it never seemed to adequately reflect the gratitude that was so deserving for all that he has accomplished during his tenure. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Bill personally, on behalf of Martha Lloyd and on behalf of the community. His service to the community extends far beyond his 23 years at Martha Lloyd and his accolades are far too reaching to chronical individually. We wish you all the best Bill!

Regardless of the inevitability of change, we are never able to anticipate how it will eventually affect us as an organization or as an individual. Although it was well planned for, Bill’s departure will undoubtedly have an impact on the agency and on many of the people that make up the Martha Lloyd community. However, as we must do with all change, we will need to embrace it in order to continue to forge ahead as an organization and continue to flourish as individuals. As Socrates suggested, “the secret to change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old but on building the new”. While profoundly stated, it does not take a renowned Greek philosopher to understand how essential it is for an organization to continually move forward and grow.

Although there is been a noticeable leadership change, there is still so much that will remain unchanged at Martha Lloyd. The safe and caring environment, that the families of the individuals we support have come to trust, will remain consistent. We are fortunate to continue to have a Board of Directors in place that is comprised of a sound group of people whose diversified experience will provide stable fiduciary leadership. The management team will strive to utilize their vast knowledge and experience to oversee the delivery of services, while assuring that the quality of those services does not falter. In addition, there would not be a Martha Lloyd without the passionate-dedicated staff, which are the foundation of the organization. I’m looking forward to working with all of them, in my new capacity, as we solidify our previous accomplishments and forge ahead to embrace our future achievements, both as an organization and (just as importantly) as individuals.
